ENROLLING AS A CAMS MAJOR OR MINOR

As a law student, I find my education as a CAMS major highly relevant to a range of my law school studies. The analytic training that comes both from studying ancient languages, and from holistically approaching a world very distant from our own, is of constant use to me. Whether I am engaged in dissecting the reasoning of a complex judicial opinion, interpreting interlinking statutory provisions, or writing a legal memo, I find the skills I learned as a CAMS major serve me well. As a CAMS major, you will learn to approach a problem from both theoretical and practical perspectives, to identify the strengths and weaknesses of those perspectives, and to balance those strengths and weaknesses to the extent possible. Whatever the area of classical studies in which you are interested, you will find faculty members quite capable and willing to engage you inside and outside of the classroom. The obvious delight that the CAMS faculty all take in their teaching makes for a rewarding and thrilling experience. Furthermore, the CAMS faculty are candid and helpful to students as they start to consider their next step after Penn State. In short, the CAMS department is an underappreciated gem of Penn State that serves its students commendably in preparing them both to think more clearly and crisply, and in enabling them to approach and to adjust to the professional, social, and cultural complexities they will encounter after graduation. Having worked in the banking industry and now as a law student, I can assure you that majoring in CAMS will not be a detriment to your career, but rather a substantial aid as you move onto other endeavors after Penn State.
